Condition:             
This Sheaffer Crest “Ensemble” snorkel fountain pen and mechanical pencil set in pastel blue was produced from 1952 to 1959. When originally offered, the set sold for US $34.00, which is roughly equivalent to $410 today.
The fountain pen is in very nice condition overall, showing lovely pastel blue color with minimal wear and only a hint of micro surface scratches. The Crest gold filled cap and clip feature a repeating pattern of longitudinal engraved lines arranged in a stepped grouping, finished with the classic white dot at the end. The pen is fitted with a medium Triumph 14 karat two tone gold nib with a platinum mask. The nib writes smoothly and can be used upside down for a fine line, a neat little trick that feels slightly alien, as if it picked it up while passing through low Earth orbit. The ink sac, barrel o-ring, and point gasket have all been replaced. The pen has been tested, it fills and writes properly.
The matching mechanical pencil shares the same pastel blue body and gold filled Crest cap. It is also in very nice condition, with minimal wear and light micro surface scratches. The pencil advances and retracts the lead as designed. It is loaded with 0.9 mm lead and does not include an eraser.
The pen and pencil set ships in the Sheaffer presentation box. The box is in overall good vintage condition, with visible ink staining on the satin and felt interior.
